Besides the famous palaces, visitors can inspect the so-called "Bathing Palace of Emperor Fasilidas" which is used for the annual Timket or Epiphany celebrations, and the abbey of the redoubtable eighteenth century Empress Menteweb at Qwesquam, in the mountains just outside Gondar.

Hi Renzo,
Can't give you any specific advice about car hire at Bahir Dar. I'd guess that 95% of car hires are starting from and ending in Addis. However, Bahir Dar has a decent size and infrastructure. You might be able to find a car and driver in Bahir Dar by going through the Gion Hotel (which I recommend, if you are travelling on a budget). If someone knows a decently priced car hire company, the staff at Gion will. Good luck and enjoy wonderful Ehtiopia!

Hello, Reto. Do you think it is possible to find a car+driver in Bahir Dar? There's 4 of us. We'll be travelling in January. We're planning to travel by car from Bahir Dar to Lalibela, doing the historical circuit. Any name, any company? (we take a flight from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar). Thank you, Renzo

Near Wukro at Adi Kaweh, near the Sheba meat works tehr eis the alleged burial site of the pagan-Hbraic Queen Yodit (ca. A.D.970)who destroyed Aksum and devastated Christian culture as a reaction to Chrsitian incursion into her land. Her grave is on teh remains of a Sabaean tmeple ca. 800 B.C.E. where incense burners were discovered in the late 1960's testifying to the presence tere of three queens of Sheba and Hebrew subjects.

Hi Guido, can't recall the prices, but our guide was Chanyalew G Medhin (Chaney), next to the Wutma Hotel in the Plaza district. It's a good area to compare prices, as a couple of car hire companies are in the same area within walking distance. Check out Red Jackal, too. Had also good prices and decent cars & drivers, but didn't want to start the tour on a Sunday (the day we arrived in Addis).

We were in Ethiopia adopting our son and spent a few days in the region where he was born.
